On October 28, Category 5 Hurricane Melissa devastated southwestern Jamaica, with wind speeds reaching up to 298 kilometers per hour, making it the strongest storm on record in the country. The disaster has claimed at least 75 lives, with economic losses estimated between 48 billion and 52 billion US dollars, equivalent to one-third of Jamaica's GDP last year.

The roof of a hospital in the capital city of Kingston was torn off, the country experienced widespread power and internet outages, approximately 80% of resort facilities in the famous tourist area of Montego Bay were destroyed, and roads and infrastructure suffered severe damage... Jamaica now faces a formidable reconstruction challenge.
